The crowd at Jemaa el-Fna, the spice and leather souks, the courtyards of the Bahia Palace. In the afternoon, the masterful plasterwork and tilework of the Ben Youssef Madrasa.

The Ourika Valley

Out of the city to the Berber villages at the foot of the Atlas. Mint tea at a small café, then a short walk to a waterfall.

Into the High Atlas: Imlil

The air cools as the road climbs. You settle into your mountain lodge, shaded by walnut trees, in Imlil, at the foot of Toubkal.

A half-day walk among stone villages, terraced gardens and streamside mills. Lunch at a family home.

At the foot of the Tizi n'Tichka pass, the famed mud-brick kasbah of Ait Benhaddou. Back to Marrakech in the evening.
